February 4th is World Cancer Day.
So today, we want to talk about the people.
The team behind the beam
Proton therapy is high-tech. We use a particle accelerator that weighs as much as a jetliner. But the machine isn’t what gets you through treatment. People do.
When you come to the Tennessee Proton Center, you inherit a squad.
- The Physicists and Dosimetrists: You might not see them often, but they are behind the scenes calculating the math to ensure your beam is accurate to the millimeter.
- The Therapists: These are the faces you see every day. They are the ones who play your favorite music while you treat. They are the ones who hold your hand when you are having a rough morning.
- The Nurses: They are your first line of defense. They manage your side effects, answer your panicked phone calls, and celebrate your wins.

It means having the best technology right here in our backyard, staffed by neighbors who care about neighbors.
Support is just as important as science
We know that the mental load of cancer is just as heavy as the physical one. If you are feeling overwhelmed today, you are not failing. You are human.
Organizations like the Cancer Support Community offer incredible resources to help you navigate the emotional side of this journey, reminding us all that community is part of the cure.
