It is November. You probably see the mustaches everywhere. It is Movember, the month where we all try to bring attention to men’s health. But if you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer recently, this isn’t just about awareness for you. It is your reality.
When you get that diagnosis, things move fast. You get thrown into a world of terms you never wanted to know. You hear about surgery, active surveillance, and different types of radiation. It is a lot to take in.
The hard part isn’t just figuring out how to treat the cancer. It is thinking about what happens after. Most men we talk to are thinking about their quality of life. They want to be sure they can get back to their normal routines, their families, and their relationships without major changes.
That is why we want to talk about proton therapy.
Understanding your radiation options
To understand why we offer proton therapy at the Tennessee Proton Center, it helps to look at how it compares to standard X-ray radiation.
Standard radiation is a very common and effective way to treat cancer. It uses photon beams, similar to X-rays, to target the tumor. These beams are powerful and do a good job of stopping cancer cells. However, because of the physics of X-rays, the beam passes through the tumor and exits out the other side of the body.
Your prostate sits right between two very important areas: your bladder and your rectum. With standard radiation, doctors do everything they can to protect those areas. But because the beam passes all the way through, the healthy tissue around the prostate still receives some radiation dose.
How protons are different
Proton therapy is just a different way of delivering radiation. We use protons instead of X-rays.
The main difference is that protons are heavy particles. We can control them with incredible speed and precision. We program the beam to travel to the exact depth of your tumor and stop.
That is the important part. It stops.
It releases its energy right where we want it and goes no further. This means there is practically no “exit dose.” This precision allows us to treat the prostate effectively while significantly reducing the amount of radiation that reaches your bladder and rectum.
Why this matters for your life
We talk about this option because it prioritizes your long-term wellness. By limiting the exposure to the healthy tissue around the prostate, we aim to protect your body’s normal functions.
Studies have shown that proton therapy is excellent at preserving quality of life. This can mean fewer challenges with urinary or bowel function down the road. And because we can better avoid the nerves and blood vessels nearby, many men feel confident about maintaining their sexual health after treatment.
We are right here in Nashville
You don’t need to fly to a different time zone to get this care. The Tennessee Proton Center is one of the few places in the Southeast that has this technology.
We know this is a stressful time. But you have options. If you are looking at treatments, or if you just want a second opinion to see if this is right for you, come talk to us.
